However, the hybrid powertrain lacked smoothness at low speeds. Fortunately, Ford’s 10-speed automatic is very smooth and offers good shifts with all powertrains.
If you do not plan on taking your pickup on off-road excursions, you might not need a 4×2 drivetrain. In warm and flat climates, this option is less desirable. But if you enjoy driving on rough terrain, you’ll love the extra safety and security 4×4 trucks have.
The Ford F-150 has been America’s best-selling pickup for 43 years. The most powerful and reliable pickup in the lineup, it also has the best fuel economy among gas-powered full-size trucks. The gas-powered F-150 gets EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city.

While the EPA does not officially certify fuel-efficiency data for the F-150, its gas mileage has been measured by real owners. The V6 engine is less powerful than its V8 counterpart, but both offer comparable gas mileage. Despite their similar power output, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine gets better gas mileage than its 5.0-liter sibling.
The Ford F150’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine gets the lowest gas mileage among all of its engines. It achieves 17 City/24 Highway/20 mpg when used in two-wheel-drive form, and only gets 14 mpg in four-wheel-drive mode. On the other hand, the Ford F150 with rear-wheel-drive can get up to twenty-four mpg.
In the 2020 lineup, Ford is offering six powertrains. Among them is the 5.0-liter V-8, which Ford expects one in four buyers to choose. Its sound sounds special, but it’s not the most powerful truck in the world. However, the 3.5-liter V6 has the same gas mileage as the 5.0-liter V8, and it has the same towing capacity as the 5.0-liter V-8.
While the 5.0-liter V8 engine produces 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, it’s not nearly as efficient. The high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is only available in two variants of the F150. The 5.0-liter V8 offers 17 city/24 highway MPG.
If you want more horsepower and fuel efficiency, the EcoBoost engine is a better choice. However, the V8 engine is better for hauling cargo and is available on more trim levels. Ford F150 Gas Mileage Both engines have a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s all about personal preference.
